This thing has a lot of sound!

These are the only whistles I use when backpacking. If I had any problems at all, they were minimal. They get so much wind and they can get scratchy. Other than that I would buy them again and again. The only problem I had was that they were just whistles and nothing more. They did nothing to protect my ears. I use a wool hat, fleece and other protective devices and they work just fine. If I didn't have these items I'm sure I would not be writing this review. I can get the wind right up to my whistle without too much trouble.

Just what I was looking for. A classic small (perfect) loud pea green and well built. This is the second of these I've owned over the years and they are always reliable. It is loud, has good sound penetration, it pealess, very easy to blow, and compact. The other reviews mention "toy like", however I see this as a sturdy whistle to use in any instance where the noise is important, rescue, general call for attention, attracting dogs, whatever. The classic colors, compact shape, and overall sound is unmistakable and a positive call for help. This will always find its way into my backpack.

Great price and great whistle. The neck chain works well to clip to a backpack or pants loop. This is a loud high pitched whistle and I would highly recommend. My son likes it so much I am ordering a second one. He will have it on his bicycle helmet in case of a tumble. Also handy to keep on your backpack in case you become disoriented in the mountains. Don't leave home without it! LOL Great price. I like it better than a compass or mirror which often get lost when the times really matter.

Use this as a safety whistle when sailing offshore and as an emergency signaling whistle when stranded on remote beaches and coastal regions. Good range, distinct, mellow tone and a single note only when blown continuously (a good safety signal). I have used this with no issues and find it good enough for the needs. The brass gives it a heft and feeling of a better quality than the ultralight whistles that seem cheap and disposable (which these often are). Only complaint would be that it could do with a larger, mouth-piece, especially for those that may be wearing loose, partial or full face masks. This might be awkward or impossible. In the case of mask use, the hole in the center is large enough to pass through, with only some partial occlusion. Other than that, this whistle serves well and I recommend it for marine use and basic everyday safety signaling. UPDATE (2/2/14): The military surplus source was a one-time-lucky discovery that seemed unobtainable until this "deal" popped up on this site for a good price (compared to original surplus purchase) and now I'm going to try to stock up on them to have them on hand in the house, office and car and other locations. If you have an application where the signal needs clarity and is a constant signaling or warning sound, I'd recommend against using this whistle. It is one tone only and without fading and flutter tones it could get old quick. But in the applications I mentioned above (sailing, exploring etc.) I find this to be an excellent and reliable all-purpose signal whistle that I can rely on to get a basic warning signal or an emergency rescue signal that will make itself known in noisy, congested regions. As an update to the previous posting about size and facial wear, I do now feel the mouth-piece could be made a bit larger, even a tenth of an inch or more. The issue of facial mask use, I can say that while the hole for a mask to pass through is of a good, adequate size, with the slight, partial occlusion

I have to turn my volume up all the way just to get a strong response out of it. Other than that I'm a very loud sleeper so I know if anyone gets to close I can wake them up pretty easily
