Scout Guide Whistle

Just a couple complaints, the edge around the mouthpiece isn't that easy to clean and you'll have to be careful when using. The knurling seems a bit too much, it's really strong. But aside from that it seems to be a decent scout master approved whistle. Also note the shade shown in the picture isn't accurate to the real one, the tiger stripe one is much more subdued than the yellow/orange one in the pic

I am not a fan of whistles in general but my mother insisted that I get one because she is very wary of coyotes on our walks. She didn't want me to carry a firearm because we live in the suburbs, and we walk in different places each day. The day we received this, we took a new path and I was able to practice sounding the whistle in different pitches. The volume was loud enough that I was confident I could get someone's attention, but not loud enough that I would have any trouble carrying on a conversation if someone was within shouting distance. We walked through the neighborhood the following day, a Saturday, and I was really glad to have the whistle. I think I might feel a little safer carrying this on a walk, knowing that I have the capability to scare off any dogs or coyotes. The cord around the neck makes it easier to hang around my neck if I don't want to wear it on my belt, and that will make the days when I carry a purse easier. The price is a little steep, but I think the price is reasonable for a small flashlight or taser. It's a piece of mind for myself and for my mother. It has been nearly a month since we got this, and I haven't had to use it yet. Hopefully I won't have to! Update: One month after purchasing, and one coyote scare later, I feel like this was worth every penny. It is so convenient to have on a loop around your neck and it was bright enough to make the animal leave. This thing is well made and definitely lives up to expectations. Update #2: One year later, and I had to write another review. After purchasing this whistle, my coyote issues have gone away. This year, however, we have had 2 small dog attacks in our neighborhood. One pit bull attack, and one barking/clawing Rottweiler. I did my research, and I bought an air horn. A proper air horn, not the stupid car horn/baojit thing that so many people try to pass off as a air horn. This was an extremely good buy and I am extremely satisfied with the overall product. Very light and very loud. We have a cabin in the mountains and there are always the usual scorpions around, which the kids tend to step on. This scorpion sting kit comes in handy to use in such a case: Scorpion Pain Reliever and Trauma Stop Kit . I highly recommend this whistle for any scout master or camper to carry with. The kids are safe!

The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the "safety feature" that cuts the sound off is too sensitive and shuts off the whistle when you blow really hard... and there's no way to cover the mouth piece to block the wind from doing that. That and the sound output could be louder... still pretty loud. Overall, the thing's pretty damn sweet and inexpensive!

I've been using one of these since the 80's when the only place to get them was Sears. My favorite because I love the piercing sound and it's easy to get to it when you're wearing it around your neck. These are the same quality I've been using for years.

Very good sound for this size of whistle. i use it to signal my retriever when i have hunt in the mountain where i have to climb. it gives me an added piece of mind and helps to save my time in case my dog go astray.

Love them for running with dogs. Everyone is safe and happy. These whistles have the loudest and longest shrift. Not the most pleasurable to use if using in an emergency but they work. You won't regret it! I got the white.

Very good product for the purpose it was intended. Not as loud as a full bodied whistle, which makes sense for it's intended purpose of signaling in open air (or over a good distance in an enclosed space). Does it's job well and has lasted a few years now. Would not hesitate to buy again for emergency or survival situations.
