Two Carpenter Brothers and an American-Made Idea
Black Beard Fire started in 2019 in a Salt Lake City apartment, founded by brothers KJ and Kaimahi Thompson. Both had spent more than a decade as carpenters building rustic mountain furniture, and both are Eagle Scouts — so a fire that lights when it has to is something they take personally. Driven by a passion for American-made craftsmanship, they outgrew the apartment for their grandmother’s garage, then a warehouse, and eventually left their day jobs to build fire starters full time. The whole line is made in America from American materials, and it’s still a family business at its core.
Three Ways to Make Fire
The Black Beard Ferro Rod is the workhorse — an extra-large 1/2″ × 5″ ferrocerium rod that throws 5,000°F sparks and is rated for up to 20,000 strikes. It works soaked, frozen, or at altitude, and ships with a hardened steel striker/scraper (with a bottle opener) on a 7-foot paracord lanyard. For a faster light, the Stormproof Matches pack twenty 3-inch matches that burn up to 25 seconds and stay lit even when submerged, sealed in a floating, O-ring ABS case with three replaceable strike pads. And when you want fire at the push of a button, the Plasma Arc Lighter throws a flameless dual-arc plasma beam that can’t be blown out — USB rechargeable, good for 300-plus ignitions per charge, with a waterproof sealed housing and no butane or fuel to ever run out.
