Douk-Douk
Authorized Dealer • Est. 1929 • Thiers, France
One knife, essentially unchanged since 1929. Hand-built by the Cognet family in Thiers — France’s cutlery capital — the Douk-Douk carries a carbon steel blade, a folded sheet-steel handle stamped with its namesake Melanesian spirit figure, and a reputation earned across a century and three continents: honest craftsmanship at a working price.
About Douk-Douk
In 1929, Gaston Cognet of Thiers — the town that has been France’s cutlery capital for six centuries — set out to build an affordable working knife for export to the French colonies. He stamped its folded sheet-steel handle with a figure he found in an illustrated dictionary: the Duk-Duk, a Melanesian spirit. The knife took the spirit’s name, crossed the oceans to Africa and the Pacific, and became one of the most widely carried pocket knives of the twentieth century. Nearly a hundred years later, the Cognet family still makes the Douk-Douk in Thiers, essentially unchanged.
The design endures because it is ruthlessly simple: a carbon steel clip-point blade that takes a wicked edge and sharpens anywhere, a slim folded-steel handle with no scales to crack or loosen, and a firm slip-joint with half-stop instead of a lock — the same formula that made it a favorite of colonial farmers, French soldiers, and modern EDC enthusiasts alike. Flat enough to disappear in a watch pocket, handsome enough to collect.
Keep Shooting carries the whole Cognet family. The Douk-Douk Le Chromé is the bright-chrome dress version of the classic, with a 3-1/8″ arabesque-etched carbon steel blade and the traditional spirit-figure stamp. Its North African sibling, the El Baraka folder, swaps the spirit for a traditional good-luck motif over a 3.5″ carbon steel blade — and the compact El Baraka pocket folder brings the same charm at watch-pocket size. At the top of the line, the Le Thiers folding knife is Cognet’s take on the protected Thiers regional pattern: a full-flat-ground stainless clip point in polished stainless scales, stamped “Le Thiers par P. Cognet.” And for the fans, the embroidered Douk-Douk morale patch puts the spirit figure on your pack.
