Born in the World’s Dangerous Places
DPx Gear was founded by Robert Young Pelton, the adventurer and war correspondent whose work took him through dozens of conflicts and well over a hundred countries — the “DPx” nods to the dangerous places that shaped his thinking. The brand’s signature design, the HEST, came about when survival expert Jeff Randall — of RAT Cutlery, later ESEE — kept pushing Pelton to turn his field experience into a knife. The result, the Hostile Environment Survival Tool, was first built in the U.S.A. in 2008 to be light, affordable, and genuinely fail-safe. Pelton has since earned more than two dozen U.S. patents for his knife designs — the through-line being tools that earn their place when conditions turn bad.
The Survival Tools We Carry
The DPx HEST is the full expression of that idea: a hard-use D2-steel fixed blade with removable Micarta scales, a built-in wire breaker, and a Kydex sheath, made in the USA for EDC and expedition work. The HEAT Hiker shrinks the concept to neck-knife size — a 2.4″ CPM-S30V drop point on a scale-less skeletonized handle, with an integrated carabiner and a Kydex sheath on a break-away lanyard, also USA-made. Both live in our fixed-blade knives. At the other end of the size and price scale, the Danger Tag is a 3.125″ stainless EDC card with a perforated breakaway blade — a lanyard-ready multitool that slips into a wallet or first-aid kit and is ready to cut cordage, packaging, or a seat belt in a pinch.
