East German Helmet Liner
This is a genuine East German (NVA) army leather helmet liner, the inner cap worn beneath a hard tanker or vehicle crew helmet shell. It sits against the head and ears to add fit and padding, with cut-out openings at the ears for a built-in communications headset. If you are building out a period East German tanker or crewman kit, this is the piece that goes inside the shell.
Features
- Leather Shell Construction — The outer cap is olive-grey leather, panelled and stitched to follow the curve of the head.
- Cloth-Bound Ear Openings — A round opening at each ear is edged with tan fabric binding, leaving room for a headset earpiece or speaker.
- Adjustable Chin Strap — A leather strap runs under the chin and feeds through a metal buckle so you can take up slack for a snug fit.
- Snap-Fastened Panel — Metal press studs at the crown let a top flap open and close, the same kind of snap you find on a jacket cuff.
- Fabric Interior — The inside carries a woven cloth layer against the leather for comfort where the liner meets the head.
- Olive-Grey Finish — The muted grey-green color matches East German NVA field equipment of the period.
- Reinforced Stitching — Seams are double-stitched along the panels and the strap, the stress points of a liner that gets pulled on and off.
- Flat-Packing Shape — With the shell removed, the soft leather folds flat for storage or display.
Issuing Service
The liner was issued by the Nationale Volksarmee, the army of the former East Germany. It was designed as the soft inner component of a crew helmet system, holding the earpieces in place and cushioning the head inside the outer shell. Exactly What I Needed For ReenactingI do Cold War reenacting and my M56 shell was fine but the liner had that old musty surplus smell and the foam was starting to flake off everywhere. This replacement liner bolted right in and now I can actually wear the thing for a full event without it feeling gross on my head. SUPER happy to have my helmet back in rotation.
