About Magazine Loaders at Keep Shooting
Keep Shooting carries a focused selection of platform-specific magazine loaders and revolver speedloaders from the category's dominant manufacturers — Israeli Maglula LULA and UpLULA loaders covering the AR-15, AK-47, M14, and Ruger 10/22 rifle platforms plus the universal 9mm – .45 ACP UpLULA pistol loader, HKS revolver speedloaders for .38 Special and .357 Magnum wheelguns, factory Glock OEM magazine speed loaders, and specialty stripper-clip and legacy-rifle loaders for AR-15/M16 and WWII-era MP44 Sturmgewehr.
Why magazine loaders matter. Loading a magazine by thumb — pressing each round down against a compressed follower spring — is one of the most fatigue-inducing tasks in recreational shooting. A stiff 30-round AR-15 magazine or a double-stack 17-round 9mm pistol magazine requires 15 to 20 pounds of thumb pressure on the final few rounds, and a shooter loading 300 rounds at a range session — ten 30-round AR magazines, or a typical training session's handgun drills — accumulates hundreds of high-pressure thumb cycles. Over years of shooting this contributes to "shooter's thumb" (thumb tendonitis and metacarpophalangeal joint irritation). A dedicated loading tool converts the motion from thumb pressure to whole-hand pressure and eliminates the injury risk entirely. At under ten dollars for most loaders in this catalog, a LULA-pattern tool pays for itself the first range trip you actually use it.
Maglula LULA — the category's defining product. Maglula Ltd. is an Israeli company founded in 2001 by a small team of engineers whose first product — the UpLULA universal pistol magazine loader — became an almost-immediate standard-issue item for the Israel Defense Forces, American law enforcement, and serious range shooters worldwide. The defining features of the LULA and UpLULA designs are a self-positioning clamp that grips the magazine's feed lips, a ratcheting follower- depression mechanism that pushes the follower down one round's worth at a time, and a thumb-operated cartridge drop that lets you seat each round with minimal force. The tool works by converting the inefficient thumb-against-cartridge motion into a hand-gripping motion that uses all four fingers and the palm — a 5-to-10× mechanical advantage for the same muscle effort.
Maglula UpLULA — universal pistol magazine loader. The UpLULA fits virtually every double-stack and single-stack pistol magazine in calibers from 9×19mm Parabellum through .45 ACP — over 80 factory pistol models including every Glock model, Beretta 92 and M9, SIG Sauer P226/P229/P320, Smith & Wesson M&P and Shield, Springfield XD and XDM, 1911 single-stack and 2011 double-stack, H&K USP and VP9, Walther PPQ and PDP, CZ 75/P-09/P-10, FN Five-seveN, and essentially every other modern service, duty, and concealed-carry pistol on the US market. If your magazine's body sits within the UpLULA's clamp range (approximately 9mm to .45 ACP magazine-body dimensions), the UpLULA loads it. This is the single most universally-recommended loader in the entire catalog.
Maglula AR-15 LULA. The AR-15 LULA is a dedicated STANAG- pattern loader for AR-15, M4, M16, and AR-15 variant magazines in 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington. It fits aluminum USGI, polymer Magpul PMAG (GEN M2 and GEN M3), Hexmag, Lancer L5AWM, Troy Battlemag, C Products Defense, KCI, ProMag, and every other STANAG-compliant AR-15 magazine. Capacities from 20-round through 30-round standard and 40-round extended are all supported; the 60-round Magpul D-60 drum requires a separate drum-specific loader. The AR-15 LULA is the correct tool for range trips loading multiple PMAGs — see our AR-15 Magazines category for compatible magazines. The AR-15 LULA does NOT work on AR-10 / SR-25 pattern magazines, which are a physically larger feed-lip geometry.
Maglula AK-47 LULA. The AK-47 LULA loads the 7.62×39mm Kalashnikov magazine feed-lip geometry — factory Russian Izhmash, Bulgarian, Romanian, Polish, Chinese, Yugoslav Zastava M70, US-made Magpul PMAG AK, and ProMag and KCI USA commercial AK magazines. See our AK-47 Magazines category for compatible magazines. Saiga 7.62×39 magazines share the standard AK feed-lip geometry and are compatible with the AK LULA; Saiga .223 and Saiga 12-gauge magazines are NOT (different feed-lip geometry for the smaller or larger cartridge). The AK LULA does not work on 75-round or 100-round AK drum magazines, which are drum-specific designs.
Maglula M14 LULA. The M14 LULA loads the 7.62×51 NATO M14 / M1A magazine — USGI surplus, commercial Springfield Armory M1A production, Check-Mate Industries, and ProMag M14 magazines in 5, 10, and 20-round capacities. See our M14 Magazines category for compatible magazines. M14 and M1A are in active US Army Designated Marksman service (M14 EBR variant) and in wide civilian ownership through Springfield Armory commercial production. The M14 LULA is also the correct tool for older 20-round M14 surplus — loading a stiff 20-round NATO-caliber magazine by thumb is one of the most finger-punishing tasks in all of battle-rifle shooting.
Maglula 10/22 LULA. The 10/22 LULA loads the Ruger 10/22 BX-15, BX-25, and ProMag aftermarket extended magazines — .22 LR rimfire. See our Ruger 10/22 Magazines subcategory for compatible magazines. The 10-round factory BX-1 rotary magazine does not require a loader (rotary designs have almost no follower spring pressure), but the BX-25 25-round extended magazine — a straight-stack design introduced in 2011 — has enough follower tension on the final rounds that thumb-loading 25 rimfire rounds becomes genuinely tedious. A 10/22 LULA turns a 45-second manual load into a 10-second mechanical load, and rimfire high-volume shooters who burn through bricks of .22 LR at the range consider it essential.
HKS revolver speedloaders. HKS Products, founded in 1964, is the American manufacturer of the original twist-knob revolver speedloader — still the dominant design pattern for revolver reloading more than 60 years later. Our HKS 36-A speedloader fits the Smith & Wesson J-frame five-shot .38 Special revolvers (Model 36, 37, 38, 49, 60, and the various modern J-frame variants) — the most widely-carried snub-nose defensive revolver on the US market. The HKS design uses a knurled knob that, when twisted 90 degrees, releases all cartridges simultaneously into the aligned chambers of an open revolver cylinder — the difference between a 2-second revolver reload and a 15-second loose-cartridge reload. For any J-frame concealed carry revolver, a pair of HKS speedloaders is the standard recommended carry supplement.
Glock OEM magazine speed loader. The factory Glock magazine speed loader is Gaston Glock's original 1980s-design plastic loading sleeve — included with every factory Glock pistol since the G17 was introduced and sold separately for owners who need spares. It fits every Glock magazine in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG — the G17, G19, G26, G34, G45 9mm magazines, and the corresponding .40 S&W and .357 SIG variants. See our Glock Magazines category for compatible magazines. The factory Glock loader is simpler and smaller than the Maglula UpLULA (a slide-on sleeve rather than a ratcheting mechanism) — appropriate as a backup kept in the factory box or as a secondary loader for when the UpLULA isn't accessible. The UpLULA is the stronger everyday choice for high-volume Glock shooters.
Specialty and legacy loaders. Our British AR-15 / M16 stripper-clip adapter is the original-issue speed-loading guide for loading 30-round AR-15 STANAG magazines directly from 10-round stripper clips — the standard field resupply method for military AR and M16 platforms before dedicated reloaders became common. The guide slips over the top of the magazine and the stripper clip seats into the guide; a thumb push drives all 10 rounds into the magazine in a single motion. Useful for both competitive speed-loading drills and for restoring stripper-clipped surplus 5.56 ammunition to magazine form. The MP44 magazine loader is the original WWII German Sturmgewehr 44 magazine loading tool — an authentic military surplus piece for MP44 collectors and reenactors. The Sturmgewehr 44 was the world's first widely-issued assault rifle — chambered in 7.92×33mm Kurz and produced in approximately 425,000 units between 1943 and 1945 — and surviving magazines are famously difficult to load by thumb due to heavy follower springs and stiff wartime-steel construction. The correct field tool is essential for any MP44 collector who intends to shoot their rifle.
Selecting the right loader for your kit. The single most-useful loader for most shooters is the Maglula UpLULA universal pistol loader — one tool covers virtually every 9mm – .45 ACP pistol magazine you'll ever own. For rifle shooters, match the LULA to your primary platform: AR-15 shooters get the AR-15 LULA (the single highest- throughput rifle loader for training and competition use); Kalashnikov shooters get the AK-47 LULA; M1A / M14 shooters get the M14 LULA; 10/22 rimfire high-volume shooters get the 10/22 LULA. Revolver shooters carrying a J-frame .38 Special get paired HKS speedloaders. The Glock OEM loader is a reasonable economy pick for exclusively-Glock shooters but is outperformed by the UpLULA in every measurable way — the only reason to stay with the Glock OEM is cost or the "factory only" preference. For browsing the full magazine catalog that pairs with these loaders, see our Rifle Magazines hub and Handgun Magazines hub.
Keep Shooting ships all magazine loaders from our Pennsylvania warehouse with free shipping on orders over $49.95 and hassle-free returns. At $8 – $35 per tool, magazine loaders are the single most cost-effective upgrade you can add to any range bag — a one-time purchase that saves thousands of thumb cycles over a shooting career, prevents the cumulative joint fatigue that eventually forces shooters to cut range sessions short, and turns magazine loading from the most fatigue-inducing task of a range day into a 3-second mechanical motion. Whether you're a concealed-carry licensee loading spare defensive pistol magazines, an AR-15 range shooter burning through 30-round PMAGs by the case, a J-frame revolver carrier maintaining paired-speedloader reload drills, or a rimfire enthusiast feeding BX-25 10/22 magazines through a high-volume plinking session, every loader in our catalog is factory OEM or authorized-manufacturer production from the companies that defined the category.
