Japanese Friction Folder

The Higonokami SK Folder Brass is a small, traditional Japanese pocket knife made for everyday cutting jobs like opening boxes, trimming cord, sharpening a pencil or whittling. It is a friction folder, a design with no locking mechanism. The blade swings out on a single pivot and stays put under steady thumb pressure on the extended tang. With a 1.5 inch carbon steel blade in a 2 inch brass body, it rides in a pocket or on a keyring and is barely noticeable until you need it.

Features

• SK5 Carbon Steel Blade — The 1.5 inch blade is SK5, a Japanese high-carbon tool steel that takes a very fine edge and is easy to resharpen.
• Hardened To HRC 60 — Heat treated to 60 on the Rockwell C scale, the standard measure of steel hardness, so the edge stays sharp through a lot of cutting.
• Friction Folding Design — Tension at the pivot holds the blade, so there are no springs or locks to wear out or clog with dirt.
• Extended Tang Lever — A steel tab at the back of the blade, called the chikiri, opens the knife with one push and gives your thumb a place to brace while you cut.
• Folded Brass Handle — The handle is a single sheet of brass folded around the blade, with a domed steel pivot rivet at one end.
• Develops A Patina — Bare brass darkens and mellows with handling, so each knife slowly takes on its own worn finish.
• Engraved Kanji Markings — One face of the handle is engraved with the Higonokami name in Japanese characters, and the reverse is left plain.
• 2 Inch Closed Length — Folded, it is short enough for a coin pocket, a keyring or a small kit pouch.
• Made In Japan — Built in Japan to the traditional Higonokami pattern.

Steel, Brass And Care

SK5 is a carbon steel, not stainless. It sharpens quickly and holds a keen edge, but it will spot or rust if you put it away wet. Wipe the blade dry after use and give it a light coat of oil now and then. Because the knife does not lock, it suits controlled cuts made toward the edge rather than prying or heavy stabbing. The brass handle needs no care unless you want to polish it back to bright.
