GI-Pattern P51 Can Opener
The P51 is the larger version of the classic military P-38 can opener. It is a flat stamped-steel tool with a folding cutter that opens tinned food when you have no kitchen opener. The longer body gives you more leverage, which helps on bigger cans and makes the cutting stroke easier on your fingers. This version from 5ive Star Gear is light and small enough to live on a key ring, in a mess kit or in a bug-out bag, so it's there when you need it.

- Folding Cutter Blade — The cutting tooth pivots on a rolled hinge, so it folds flat against the body for carry and swings out when you need it.
- Rim-Hooking Notch — A curved notch behind the blade catches the lip of the can and acts as the pivot point while the tooth works around the lid.
- P51 Size — The body is longer than the smaller P-38 pattern, which gives more leverage and a fuller grip.
- Stamped Steel Construction — The body and blade are formed from flat steel with no moving parts beyond the single hinge.
- Pressed Stiffening Ribs — Two raised ribs run the length of the body to keep it from flexing under pressure.
- Key Ring Hole — A round hole at one end takes a split ring, lanyard, dog tag chain or carabiner.
- Flat Pocket Profile — With the blade folded, the opener lies flat in a pocket, wallet or kit pouch.
- No Batteries or Power — It works entirely by hand, so it suits camping, emergency kits and power outages.
How to Use It
Fold the blade out, hook the notch under the rim of the can and press the tooth down through the lid just inside the edge. Rock the opener forward, step it along a short distance and repeat until you have cut around the lid. It takes a few cans to get the rhythm. After that it's quick, and the larger P51 body makes each stroke less work than with a P-38.

Works greatBought this to throw in my camping bag after my buddy swore by the one he had in the army. Took it out last weekend and opened 3 cans of chili and a big can of beans with no problem, once you get the rocking motion down it goes around the can pretty quick and its way easier on the hands than I expected for being flat metal. Its a full 2 inches so you get decent leverage, my uncle says the little P-38 ones are worse for big hands and I believe him. Also took me a couple cans to really get the hang of the puncture and rock technique, theres a learning curve if you never used one. For the price though you cant beat it, gonna order a couple more for the truck and the emergency kit.

Tiny but works greatTossed this on my keychain and finally used it on a can of chili when we were camping last weekend. Cuts through the lid smooth once you get the hang of the little fold out blade, does what its supposed to no problem. Only nitpick is its so small I almost dropped it in the dirt twice cause my hands were greasy. Still super handy and way better than dragging a big opener around.

Perfect classic gear for my kit.This P51 is exactly like the ones my grandpa used to talk about from the army. It opens modern cans without any issues and takes up almost no space in my pocket. It is a must-have for any bugout bag or emergency supply kit.
