This is the US Army's Generation III cold weather fleece jacket, the insulating layer of the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), a set of garments meant to be stacked and adjusted as conditions change. It is a thick, high-loft fleece that traps warm air close to the body. You can wear it alone on a cold day or under a shell when wind and wet move in. Soldiers, hunters, campers and surplus collectors all use it as a cold weather midlayer.
