This United Defense magazine holds five rounds for M14-pattern rifles, the 7.62x51mm NATO battle rifle and its civilian semi-automatic counterparts such as the M1A. The short body sits close to the receiver. That keeps the rifle easier to shoulder from prone or a bench, and it suits hunting where local rules limit how many rounds a magazine may hold. Construction and Fit
The magazine uses a steel box with welded seams, a reinforced spine down one side and pressed feed lips at the top, following the layout of the original M14 design. It installs the standard way: hook the front catch into the receiver, rock the rear back until the latch engages, and press the latch to release. Because it is short, it clears the ground and sandbags more easily than a 20-round magazine.

What A Hunting Mag Should DoBought two of these for my Springfield Armory M1A because my state has a 5-round limit during deer season and i didn't want to mess with blocking my 20-rounders. Straightforward purchase, arrived well packaged, no cosmetic damage. Dropped right in on the first try, locked up solid, and dropped free cleanly on the release no drama. I ran about 80 rounds of Winchester white box 7.62x51 through them at the range just to verify before season and they fed every single one without a hiccup. Spring tension felt good, maybe just slightly stiff to load the last round but nothing that's gonna cause problems... that's just how new steel mags are. Compared to what i've seen some guys post about fitment headaches with Checkmate mags on tighter commercial receivers, these actually seated easier for me. For a working hunting mag that sits flush and doesn't snag brush, this is exactly right. No complaints.

Good magSpent 22 years with the Army and carried an M14 before they transitioned most of us over to the M16. When I picked up my M1A a few years back I started collecting mags and these are the ones I keep going back to. Lock-up is solid, front catch seats right where it should, rear latch snaps in clean. Mine came in great shape, parkerizing looked fresh and even, no dings or rough spots on the feed lips. Only reason I grabbed the 5-rounder is I take this rifle out to Wyoming every fall for elk and the outfitter prefers you run low-cap anyway. Fed all 5 rounds without a hiccup, no nose-diving, no stovepipes. The anti-tilt follower is the right call on a short mag like this where the spring geometry gets a little weird. Already ordered two more
