Magnesium Fire Starter

This is a Survivor Series magnesium fire starter from Sona Enterprises, sold under the SE label. It is a solid magnesium block paired with a steel striker. To use it, you scrape fine shavings off the block into your tinder, then strike sparks onto the pile to light it. It needs no fuel and has no moving parts, so it fits in a camping kit, a hiking pack, a vehicle bag or an emergency kit as a backup to matches and lighters.

Using The Block

Hold the block over a dry surface and scrape the striker along it to build a small pile of magnesium shavings about the size of a coin, set into or beside your tinder. Then strike firmly to send sparks into the pile, and once the magnesium flares, feed the flame with dry grass, bark or small twigs. Using it well takes some practice, so try it at home before you need it in the field.
