Description
Cold War Civil Defense Mask
The GP-5 is the gas mask the Soviet Union issued to its civilian population from 1962, as the backbone of its Cold War civil defense program. This kit pairs the full-head rubber face piece with its 40mm filter canister and the olive canvas bag it was carried in. Collectors, Cold War reenactors and anyone building a display of Soviet-era kit will recognize it immediately, and it is the genuine issued article rather than a copy.
Features
- ShM-62 Series Face Piece — The gray rubber hood pulls over the entire head, so there are no separate head straps to adjust.
- One-Piece Rubber Construction — The mask is molded as a single lightweight piece that stretches to fit a range of head sizes.
- Twin Round Eyepieces — Two sealed lenses sit in metal retaining rings, giving the GP-5 its instantly recognizable look.
- Single-Filter Design — One filter threads into the metal-ringed inlet at the chin, below the wearer's mouth.
- 40mm GOST Thread — The inlet uses the Soviet GOST standard thread, which does not accept NATO STANAG 4155 filters, so plan on 40mm GOST canisters only.
- GP-5 Filter Canister Included — An olive green 40mm canister comes with the kit and screws directly onto the face piece.
- Olive Canvas Carry Bag — The original-pattern bag holds the mask and canister, with a side pocket closed by a flap and press stud.
- Adjustable Shoulder Strap — A cotton twill strap with metal slide buckles lets you set the carry length across the body or over one shoulder.
Soviet Issue Specification
The GP-5 went to Soviet civil defense organizations and was also supplied across the Eastern Bloc. Its layout is simple: a rubber hood, two eyepieces, a single threaded filter and a canvas bag to carry it all. That 40mm GOST thread is the main compatibility point to note, since it matches Soviet and Warsaw Pact filters and not the NATO standard. As issued government kit, it carries a provenance that modern-made masks cannot match.

Cool surplus piece actually worksGot this GP-5 for a halloween setup and also just to keep in the garage with my other surplus stuff. Put it on and the seal around my face was tighter than I expected, I could breathe through the filter fine for like 15 minutes while I was sorting boxes. Smells a little like old rubber and storage which is kinda gross at first but it airs out. Bag is beat up but still usable. Only nitpick is the straps took forever to get adjusted right on my big head.

Great for the priceLook, for under 20 bucks you get a complete mask, bag, and filter - hard to complain about that value. This isn't modern CBRN gear obviously, it's surplus from the 70s and 80s. The rubber is surprisingly supple for its age, no dry rot or cracks on mine. Bag is canvas with two shoulder straps, works fine for carrying around. For what I paid I'm happy! it's a conversation piece and looks cool as heck. Shipping was fast too, arrived in about 4 days.
