A2 Birdcage Flash Hider
The United Defense A2 Flash Hider is a replacement muzzle device for the AR-15, built to the familiar "birdcage" pattern used on the M16A2 and many of the rifles that came after it. A flash hider breaks up the burning gas that leaves the muzzle, so the shooter sees less flash, especially in low light. Pick this one for a retro or standard-profile build, or to replace a worn or missing device with the shape most AR owners already know.
Features
- A2 Birdcage Profile — Long slots cut around the forward end let muzzle gas spread out and cool, which cuts down the visible flash.
- Solid Underside — Following the A2 pattern, the bottom stays closed so gas is not directed into the ground, which helps keep dust from kicking up when you fire from a prone or rested position.
- Threaded Bore — Internal threads at the rear let the hider screw directly onto a threaded AR-15 muzzle.
- Wrench Flats — Flat faces machined on the rear section give an armorer's wrench a secure grip during installation and removal.
- Grooved Rear Collar — Two cut rings around the base break up the profile and give a clear visual line between the mounting section and the slotted cage.
- Matte Dark Finish — A non-reflective dark gray finish matches most AR-15 barrels and furniture without adding shine at the muzzle.
- Compact Length — The short, standard birdcage length adds very little to the overall length of the rifle.
Fit And Installation
This flash hider is made for AR-15 rifles with a threaded muzzle. Before ordering, confirm that your barrel's thread pitch matches. A2-style hiders are usually timed, or turned so the slots sit upward and the solid side faces down, with a crush washer or peel washer behind them, then tightened with a wrench on the flats.

Works as expectedPut this on my new build and it does exactly what an A2 birdcage should. No complaints, solid finish and threaded right on.

Old StandardThere's a reason that the A2 flash hider has lasted as long as it has: it works. Sure, there are newer flash hiders that will do the job just a teeny weenie little bit better, but it's diminishing returns on your money. The A2 will help you conceal your position during night firing. And, unlike an A1 flash hider, it won't kick up a lot of dust if you're firing prone.
