Pepper Spray at Keep Shooting
Keep Shooting carries professional-grade defensive aerosol products from the brands that police, corrections officers, and private security actually carry on duty — Aerko International, Fox Labs, First Defense, Mace, Sabre, and Frontiersman. Our catalog covers the full range of defensive sprays: Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) pepper sprays in compact carry sizes and full-size duty canisters, +P tear gas formulations that combine OC with CN or CS for faster effect, pepper gel deployments that resist wind and reduce blowback, large-volume crowd-management foggers, tear gas extraction grenades for cell entry and building clearing, and dedicated bear-defense sprays for wilderness use. This is not the supermarket-grade pocket spray category — every product on this page is law enforcement, corrections, or wildlife-defense duty grade.
The active ingredient in pepper spray is Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) — an oil-based extract from chili pepper plants whose active compound, capsaicin, irritates the eyes, respiratory tract, and exposed skin. Pure capsaicin rates 16,000,000 SHU on the Scoville Heat Unit scale; commercial OC sprays for human use are formulated to rate between 200,000 and 2,000,000 SHU at the spray nozzle. The actual stopping power of a pepper spray is measured by Major Capsaicinoids (MC) percentage, not SHU — modern law enforcement OC and the highest-potency personal defense sprays measure roughly 1.33% MC, which corresponds to about 2,000,000 SHU. Major capsaicinoid percentage can only be verified through High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) testing, which is the actual lab method serious manufacturers use to certify their formulations. A 2018 study by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine found that pepper spray reduces aggressive behavior by an average of 90 percent; full effects develop within 30–45 seconds and last 30–45 minutes depending on the individual and decontamination response.
Our pepper spray catalog is built around three Aerko International product lines that have served U.S. law enforcement for decades. Aerko Freeze +P combines OC pepper with CN tear gas in a +P formulation that delivers faster onset than pure OC, available in compact 4-ounce canisters with flip-top safety caps and in 2-ounce backup sizes. Aerko Deep Freeze is the higher-volume version of the same +P formulation, offered in 9-ounce sprays and foggers and as a 9-ounce cell-extraction canister. Aerko Clear Out is the brand's high-volume burst fogger for crowd management and area denial, and the Clear Out 2oz and 6oz Tear Gas Grenades plus the Clear Out Tear Gas Extraction Grenade give corrections officers the deployable burst options needed for cell entry and building clearing. The First Defense MK-3 Police Pepper Spray is the duty-issue spray developed by Defense Technology specifically for police belt carry — the MK-3 designation is the industry-standard size code for a 1.5-ounce flip-top duty canister.
For the highest concentrations and the most wind-resistant deployment patterns, we carry the Fox Labs Pistol Grip Crowd Control Pepper Spray and three Mace pepper gel products. Fox Labs is widely recognized as one of the hottest commercial OC formulations on the market — the Five Point Three Squared formulation runs a 5.3M SHU pepper extract base independently tested at 1.4 MC (Major Capsaicinoids). The pistol grip crowd-control unit deploys in a fog spray pattern designed for multi-subject engagement across a wide forward arc rather than the focused stream pattern used by personal-carry sprays. Mace's Magnum pepper gel line replaces the traditional aerosol carrier with a sticky gel formulation that travels in a cohesive stream rather than dispersing in the air — which reduces blowback in indoor and confined spaces, cuts cross-contamination risk, and adheres to the target's face for faster onset. We carry the MACE Magnum 3 Pepper Gel, the larger MACE Magnum-4 Pepper Gel Spray, and the MACE Night Defender Pepper Gel Magnum 3 with an integrated LED light for low-light target identification.
For wilderness use, we carry the Frontiersman Bear Attack Deterrent Spray. Bear sprays are formulated and regulated differently from human-defense sprays — they use a higher-volume aerosol pattern designed to create a wide cloud at distance (typically 25–35 feet) and contain a less concentrated OC formulation (1.0–2.0% capsaicinoids) intended to deter rather than incapacitate a 600-pound predator. Bear spray is the EPA-registered defensive tool that the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and Alaskan guides recommend for hiking, camping, and hunting in bear country, and it is specifically NOT interchangeable with human-defense pepper spray — each is built for a different mission.
Tear gas formulations require a brief technical note. Several of our Aerko products are not pure OC pepper spray — they are +P blends that combine OC with CN (chloroacetophenone) or CS (2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile) chemical irritants for faster onset against subjects whose pain response is impaired by drugs, alcohol, or determined aggression. CN/CS tear gas products are legal in most states for civilian self-defense but face additional restrictions in some jurisdictions — Wisconsin, for example, allows OC sprays only and prohibits CN, CS, and OC-plus-tear-gas blends. Always verify your state and local laws before ordering a +P or tear gas product.
Pepper spray is legal for self-defense in all 50 states, but state laws vary significantly on canister size, concentration limits, age restrictions, and shipping. Several states impose meaningful restrictions: New York caps Major Capsaicinoid concentration at 0.7% and limits civilians to two units per purchase; Massachusetts allowed civilian carry only after a 2014 law change; Wisconsin caps canister size at 2 ounces and prohibits CN/CS formulations; Michigan caps OC concentration at 10% and canister weight at 35 grams; California caps canister size at 2.5 ounces; Hawaii limits sprays to ½ ounce and requires licensing; and New Jersey, Florida, and several other states have additional rules. Keep Shooting cannot ship pepper spray, tear gas, or bear spray to New York, Massachusetts, Alaska, Hawaii, or Washington D.C. — these jurisdictions either prohibit civilian possession outright or have carrier and concentration restrictions our supplier chain cannot accommodate. Buyers in all other states are responsible for verifying that their selected product complies with their state, county, and city laws before ordering.
Keep Shooting ships pepper spray, tear gas, and bear spray from our Pennsylvania warehouse with fast delivery and hassle-free returns. Aerosol products ship via ground service only (federal hazardous materials regulations prohibit air shipment of pressurized canisters), so please allow standard ground transit time on these orders. Free shipping on orders over $49.95 still applies to qualifying ground-shipped pepper spray orders.
