The Ontario Knife RAT IA is a full-size folding knife with assisted opening: you start the blade moving with the thumb stud and a spring carries it the rest of the way. It pairs a black-coated AUS-8 drop point blade with a tan textured handle and a pocket clip, so it is easy to carry daily and quick to deploy one-handed. The blade carries the RAT (Randall's Adventure Training) logo, the survival-training outfit whose name the design has carried since it was introduced.

• Assisted Opening — A spring finishes opening the blade once you push it past the first few degrees with your thumb.
• AUS-8 Stainless Blade — AUS-8 is a Japanese stainless steel known for holding a reasonable edge while staying easy to resharpen in the field.
• Black Coated Finish — The blade is finished in black to cut glare and match the dark hardware on the handle.
• Plain Edge Drop Point — A drop point, where the spine slopes gently down to the tip, gives a strong point and a long straight edge for general cutting.
• Ambidextrous Thumb Stud — The stud stands proud on both sides of the blade, so you can open the knife with either hand.
• Jimped Spine — Grooves cut into the blade spine just ahead of the handle give your thumb a grip during controlled cuts.
• Sliding Safety Switch — A slider with a red indicator sits on the handle, a common fitting on assisted knives for keeping the blade closed in the pocket.
• Textured Tan Handle — The handle scales carry a fine crosshatch texture and a finger choil behind the blade for a secure hold.
• Steel Liners And Open Back — Steel liners run inside the scales, and spacer posts leave the back open so lint and grit are easier to clear out.

Build And Carry

The blade is stamped "Model 1A" and "AUS-8" on one side and "Taiwan" on the other. Black Torx-head screws hold the handle together, so you can take it apart for cleaning with the right driver. The clip mounts at the pivot end of the handle, which carries the knife tip-down in the pocket, and extra holes are drilled at both ends of the scales.
