Issued Survival Knife
This is the British Army Survival Knife, a fixed-blade knife built to Ministry of Defence specification and issued to RAF aircrew in their Personal Survival Packs, to the Royal Marines and to British Army personnel. It was designed as a single knife for chopping, slicing and carving in the field, so one tool could cover shelter building, food preparation and general camp work. Collectors, reenactors and bushcraft users carry it because it is the real issued pattern.
Features
- 7 Inch Carbon Steel Blade — The 175mm (about 7 in) blade is carbon steel, which takes a keen edge and is easy to resharpen in the field.
- 6mm Spine Thickness — A spine of about 1/4 in (6mm) gives the blade enough weight and stiffness for chopping and batoning wood.
- Full Tang Construction — The steel runs the full length of the handle rather than stopping partway, so the knife holds up to hard use without loosening.
- Triple-Riveted Handle — Three rivets pass through the hardwood scales and the tang to lock the grip in place.
- Phosphate Blade Finish — A matte, anti-reflective phosphate coating cuts glare and helps protect the carbon steel from rust.
- Steel Crossguard — A flat guard between blade and handle stops your hand from sliding forward onto the edge.
- Lanyard Hole — A hole through the pommel end takes a wrist cord so the knife stays with you if it slips from your grip.
- Leather Belt Sheath — The riveted and stitched leather sheath has a belt loop and a snap-fastened retaining strap, and it was designed for wear on the left side.
- NATO Stock Number — The knife carries a stamped NATO identification number, the code used to catalogue items in military supply systems.
MoD Specification
J. Adams of Sheffield made this knife to the Ministry of Defence's own specification, which is why the same pattern turns up in aircrew survival packs and on Marines' and soldiers' belts. Overall length is about 12 in, and the knife weighs just over a pound, heavy enough to chop but still easy to carry on a belt. The hardwood handle is shaped with a swell at the pommel for a secure grip when swinging.

Built like a tankThis knife is massive and well made for the price.

Very impressedBought this to complete my bug out bag setup and its exactly what I was hoping for. This thing is a beast with that thick carbon steel blade and you can feel the quality when you hold it. Been using it around my property to baton firewood and it works like a charm. Only thing is you really need a smaller knife too for the detailed stuff like carving cause this ones too chunky for fine work, but for heavy duty survival tasks its PERFECT.

The wooden scales...They overlap the tang so that in sub-zero temperatures you can still use the knife without the freezing cold steel causing frostbite or freezing to your wet hand.

Heavy knifeThis knife has a thick blade and flat black finish of some sort. The finish seems to be very tough, but will eventually show wear. It is full tang and I doubt you could bend or break it very easily. The main drawback was the fit of the handle. My knife had a poorly fitted handle. It was tightly riveted in place, but the wood stuck out past the edge of the tang anywhere from 1/16 inch to almost 1/4 inch. In other words, the wood pieces are shaped separately from the blade and then riveted in place with no final fitting. I suppose the knife would have to be priced much higher if hand fitting was done. The blade is substantial and well made, but a buyer ought to be prepared for a sloppy fit of the handle.
