About the M-14 Rifle

The M14 Rifle, formally known as the United States Rifle, Caliber 7.62mm, M14, has a rich history dating back to the early 1950s. It was designed by Springfield Armory as a replacement for the M1 Garand and the M2 Carbine, combining features of both. The M14 is a gas-operated, selective-fire rifle that can fire semi-automatically or in three-round bursts, with a 20-round detachable box magazine. It operates on the principle of direct impingement, where gases from the fired round are directed back into the receiver to cycle the action. Despite being phased out from general military use, the M14 remains popular for several reasons: its robust design, reliability, and its ability to fire the powerful 7.62x51mm NATO round. This makes it a favorite among civilian shooters, competitive marksmen, and select military units, particularly those requiring a capable sniper rifle. The M14’s enduring appeal also stems from its historical significance and its representation of a time when American manufacturing was at the forefront of firearms technology.
